Text: Thomas’ Calculus: Early Transcendentals 13th Edition

Any way you can have access to the text is fine. I will be referencing the 13th edition, but if you have the newer or an older edition, that should also work. If you have access to the book through the online Pearson MyMathLab, there are additional study materials that might be useful, but it is not required.

Prerequisites: Math 21A, 21B, 21C or equivalent. This material is in the first 14 chapters of the text. Good prerequisite chapters to review are Chapter 5, defining the integral, Chapter 12, introducing vectors, and Chapter 14 on partial derivatives.

Course Material: We will be covering Chapter 15 (sections 15.1-15.8), then Chapter 13 (sections 13.1-13.5), then Chapter 16 (16.1-16.8), following pretty closely to the Department Syllabus: https://www.math.ucdavis.edu/courses/syllabus_detail?cm_id=57

The big ideas of 21A and 21B were derivatives and integrals, respectively. Then in 21C we introduced vectors and started learning about functions of multiple variables, where the derivative was generalized to the partial derivatives and gradient vector. Now the big idea in 21D is to extend integration to multivariable functions.

Grading: Your course grade will be based on

25% Quizzes

25% Midterm

50% Final

Note the change in the grading policy to the cancellation of the second midterm because of the disruption of the course.

Quizzes: There will be homework problems assigned every day, posted on Canvas. We will have a quiz at the beginning of class on every Tuesday, based on the previous weeks’ homework assignments. It is vital to keep up with the homeworks. The lowest 2 quiz scores will be dropped. There are no make-up quizzes, so any missed quizzes will count toward the lowest 2 dropped scores.

Midterm: We will have two midterms, the first on Friday Oct 19, covering Chapter 15, and the second on Friday Nov 16, covering Chapter 13 and roughly the first half of Chapter 16. The midterms are in class at the usual time.

Final: Wednesday, December 12—10:30-12:30 p.m.

The tests will be closed book and closed notes. There are no make-up exams.

Curve: I expect to curve the final grades in the course based on the class performance on the tests. Thus the grade that Canvas tells you based on your number of points in the course is not necessarily your actual grade in the class.

Academic Integrity: There is zero tolerance for cheating in this class. Any cases of academic dishonesty will be taken to the Student Judicial Affairs. Students are expected to have read, to have understood, and to act in accordance with the Code of Academic Conduct, available at http://sja.ucdavis.edu/cac.html.

Disability Accommodations: Any student with a documented disability who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Student Disability Center (SDC). Faculty are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the SDC. If you have any questions, please contact the SDC at 530/752-3184 or sdc@ucdavis.edu.

Registration Deadlines: Last Day to Add Classes: October 11
