Physics 250 – Introduction to Accelerator Physics

COURSE OVERVIEW: Particle accelerators are a ubiquitous technology, with applications in fundamental research, material science, medicine, industrial processing, and even art, to name just a few. The goal of this course is to provide students with a rigorous introduction to the underlying physics of these accelerators, as well as an overview of the state of the art and current challenges in the field. Topics will include:

· Magnetic focusing and betatron motion

· Acceleration and longitudinal motion

· Colliding beams

· Secondary beams

· Instabilities

· Synchrotron radiation and light sources

· Instrumentation

· Superconductivity

· Advanced acceleration concepts

· Other applications

HOMEWORK: There will 5 homework sets assigned. Students are encouraged to discuss the assigned problems with other students, however, directly copying someone else’s work is not acceptable.

LABS: There is no formal lab component to this course; however, in addition to the homework sets, there will be several simulation assignments.

(Tentative!) GRADING: 70% Homework and simulations, 30% Final Project
