About Examity Proctoring

Exams in this course will be online and will be proctored by Examity.

Overview:

The exam is on Canvas, but it is password protected. You use Examity to set up the proctoring recording. The Examity proctor has the password to unlock the exam in Canvas for you. So you go through Examity first. You can find it under Modules: Examity Proctoring

You will be watched and recorded while you unlock and take the exam in Canvas. Both are revised by a human and an AI to assure academic integrity (the AI is particularly picky). Any flags will be sent to the instructor for additional review + potentially to Judicial Affairs. Please keep your eyes on the exam and do not have anything else running on your computer.

  1. Create an Examity Profile
  2. Schedule the Exam
  3. When it's time to start the exam, go to Modules and open Examity Proctoring
  4. Take a picture of your face, a picture of your ID, and agree to the terms
  5. If you don't have the extensions already installed, it will ask you to install it. If you do, then click to start the proctoring
  6. Examity will open a new window (if not: please open it up in a NEW window with 'right-click') and ask to share your screen.
  7. Clicking "Begin" will then launch the Exam on Canvas automatically
  8. Another window will pop up to retrieve your password. Clicking that will automatically enter the password, and you can start taking the exam
  9. After you are done, click submit on Canvas, go back to the other window and click end session.

Creating a Profile:

  • Log into your course within Canvas and select the Examity link under Modules: Examity Proctoring
  • Click on “My Profile” to select your time zone, upload a picture of your photo ID (you’ll need to have this ID with you each time you take a test), select and answer security questions, and enter your biometric keystroke information.
  • Once your profile is complete, you will be able to schedule, cancel, or reschedule your exam through the Examity dashboard. If the 'on-demand' scheduling is on, you can turn it off and schedule your exam. Use the on-demand scheduling option to take test within 24 hours (for an extra $5 cost, which you are responsible for).

Checking your Computer:

Verify now that your computer system and internet speed are ready for testing. Click on the “Computer System Requirements Check” located in the top right corner of your profile page. Within seconds, you’ll know if you meet Examity’s testing requirements.

Trouble Shooting:

It is likely, and to be expected, that you might run into some problems. The most common relate to finding the password to unlock the exam (note the instructions given when you start the process), screen-sharing and ad-blocker permissions, and specialties for Mac users. Please have a look here for troubleshooting: https://examity.com/online-proctoring-troubleshooting-guide-for-test-takers-v4/ Links to an external site.

Please note: Click the EXAM PASSWORD button once you are on the Canvas exam page – NOT on the instructions page. To re-enter the exam password click the icon in the right-hand corner of the toolbar and click the text next to End Session:

If "Begin Exam" doesn't work, see the above troubleshoot doc. Among other reasons, it might be because you did not stick to the requirements of having anything else running (additional monitors, other windows open, programs in the background, etc).

In case other workarounds fail, try all over again (just like with Gephi or Webscraper.io, this is also often the quickest solution for the Examity app):

  1. In the top right-hand corner next to the URL box, look for an orange icon in the shape of a shield. Right-click and select the option to remove the extension
  2. Clean the browsing history cache + cookies from your browser (from the last few days since you started to use Examity). Update your browser, and/or simply uninstall and re-install it if you don't have anything to lose on this browser! (don't re-import your past history if you get asked)
  3.  Restart your computer
  4.  Open the TASK/ACTIVITY MANAGER, and close any other software/app: Windows Task Manager: hit Control+ALT+DEL. Mac Activity Monitor: /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Nothing else can be running.
  5. Try again, clean slate.

During the Exam:

Be aware that you need to be alone in the room, with a clear desk and area, and that your computer needs to be connected to a power source. No phones or headphones, no dual monitors, and no leaving seat. No talking and no noise in general. Webcam, speakers, and microphones must remain on throughout the test. The proctor must be able to see you for the duration of the test.

Be aware that your session will be recorded. This recording will be meticulously reviewed, by the proctor, and, in case of any suspicious behavior, by the instructors. Very unfortunately, given the nature of this setting where both of us are at a distance and things are reviewed in hindsight (i.e. we cannot check in about things in person as they happen), any suspicious activity will be passed on to Judicial Affairs immediately. Please keep your eyes on the screen, stay silent, and concentrated.

Please also make sure to do all technical tests before-hand, so the prep-time will not create any unnecessary stress for you.
