Did you know that Spanish is the official language in a Sub-Saharan African country? This course explores the Spanish colonial past in Equatorial Guinea —a former colony of Spain until 1968—, and present-day afro-descendant cultural production and representations of race in Spain. Our focus will be the relationship of imperialism and culture in three moments: Spanish colonial discourse during General Franco’s dictatorship; the emergence of post-independence Equatoguinean literature; and current notions of racial identity in 21st-century Spain. Using theoretical concepts from Cultural and Postcolonial Studies, a series of literary works, documentaries, films and visual cultural objects will be analyzed.
A Course Reader will be uploaded on Canvas.
